Mexico’s tax on soft drinks
Created on February 7, 2014
The people of Mexico drink more soft drinks than people in any other country in the world.
In 2013, the government of Mexico decided to increase the taxes on soft drinks with sugar because of the health issues soft drinks cause, such as obesity and diabetes.
Mexico is not the first country to attempt tax increases on unhealthy foods. In 2011, Denmark, put a tax on fatty foods to try and improve people’s health.
The President of Mexico has said that the money raised from the taxes on soft drinks will be used to provide clean drinking water in schools that need it.
